Data Visualization & Storytelling for Scientists

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION (2 days)
In this workshop we will cover the theory of visual perception and graphic design to understand best practices in explanatory and exploratory data visualization. We will explore the graphical continuum and learn how to choose the right chart type depending on data type and message based on good and bad examples of published papers. Furthermorewe will study the principles of storytelling as a tool to better communicate data-driven research. To strengthen the acquired knowledge, we will alternate theory units with interactive exercises in which participants will be applying good standards in data visualization & storytelling on their own data to improve data communication of their own message.

Topics for the course:

  • The importance of communication in science
  • Graphical efficiency for science communication
  • Graphical integrity and the issue of science reproducibility
  • The graphical continuum and choosing the right chart
  • Do’s and don’ts for data visualization
    • Graphic design
    • Color
    • Chart-junk
  • Working with data visualization libraries for R | Python
  • The elements of storytelling and the narrative spectrum
  • Storyboarding with data sketches

Data Visualization & Storytelling for Data Scientists

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION (1/2 – 2 days)

Data scientists often inherit the bad data visualization practices governing the scientific world and are suddenly confronted with the challenges of communicating their work and results with business branches that want clean, concrete and easy-to-understand (data-) presentations.

In this workshop, we will cover the theory of visual perception and graphic design to understand what is the essence of good data visualization for a better and more efficient communication of data projects. The course is specifically designed for and by data scientists to tackle the particular challenges with which we are confronted in our day-to-day job.

Possible topics for the course:
  • From numbers to management presentations: data visualization challenges for data scientists
  • Graphical efficiency for data communication
  • The graphical continuum and choosing the right chart
  • Do’s and don’ts for data visualization
    • Graphic design
    • Color
    • Chart-junk
  • Working with data visualization libraries for R | Python
  • The elements of storytelling and the narrative spectrum
  • Storyboarding with data sketches
